The conference was an open forum addressed to a range of scientific and engineering challenges important for further development of the high-performance computing (HPC) in Europe and China. The Conference focus was on the strategic nature of HPC as a crucial asset for the scientific competitiveness and innovation capacity. The aims of the conference were: to encourage the scientific collaboration between Europe and China in the ICT field; to identify research challenges for further development of joint research projects in the area of computing systems; to make some important contributions to the strategic research planning on future European Research Frameworks (Horizon 2020). The Conference was opened by acad. Stefan Vodenicharov, the President of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. During the Conference, a number of prominent scientists and high-level experts from Europe and China traced emerging trends and new opportunities for scientific and research collaborations in the field of HPC highlighting possible needs for additional efforts between Europe and China in the future. Among them were the highest rank representatives of the most powerful supercomputer centers in Europe (Germany – Julich, Munich, and Stuttgart; Spain – Barcelona; Italy – Bologna, and France) and the National Supercomputer Centre – Tianjin, the National Supercomputer Centre – Tianjin, China; INSPUR Group Co. In the late afternoon of April 16, the Chinese delegation visited IICT for a more detailed introduction of the leading Bulgarian institution in the field of HPC. After some useful discussions, the guests visited the IICT Computing center with Grid and HPC facilities.
